Here is the list of supplies you will at least need:
1. The best sugar cookie recipe
2. My superior royal icing recipe
3. Cookie stencils
4. Food color markers
5. Airbrush, cordless or with hose
6. Sprinkles
7. Royal icing transfers
Pretty simple.
No worries if you do not have an airbrush. It's not mandatory. However, I would seriously consider one as it will enhance your finished cookies. So much so, you can charge more! You can't beat the price either!
Super economical. More on that below.
Let me elaborate a little on the supplies. You will need the two best recipes, which I provide for free (believe me, you not only need, but will want these)...
1. My Superior Royal Icing Recipe
3. Cookie stencils. Once you have those, you will typically want cookie stencils. I go deep into the stencil topic on these pages...
Cookie Stenciling (with plastic/acetate stencils)
Cookie Stenciling Techniques (different ways to decorate)
Silk Screen Cookie Decorating (the scrape method, tutorial video, and making in mass quantity)
Silk Screen Cookie Stencils (everything from each item needed, to a tutorial video on making them, step-by-step)
The cookie stencils you choose will vary, obviously, for each theme of sports sugar cookies. Threads for baseball, lines of the tennis ball, etc.

4. Next up, food color markers. These are invaluable for basketball cookies if you do not have an airbrush or do not feel like getting it out. I have certainly used just a plastic stencil with basketball lines and used the food markers with it. Works delightfully!
5. The airbrush. Well, what can I say? It's one of those pieces of equipment you can't do without for decorating sugar cookies, especially sports sugar cookies. It enables you to add those dirty smudges and depth to the balls. Getting that striped look for football and baseball fields, too. Much needed!
If you would like to learn how to airbrush or clean an airbrush, I've written a step-by-step guide with a video for you here: Airbrushing Cookies.
If you don't have one, did you know you don't have to spend a fortune on an airbrush for cookies? Seriously. I have two kinds. Here they are...
6. Sprinkles are another thing. For instance, I like to use little stars on my baseball caps, like this...
7. Royal icing transfers. These are perfect for little baseballs, basketballs, footballs, you name it! Sometimes I add starts or lightning transfers too. Like this...
I absolutely love piping transfers out on a template (or some just call them transfer sheets). What? Have you yet to use this amazing tool? Have a look at my page that teaches you everything you need to know. Here's my page: Royal Icing Transfer Sheets.
To make basketball or football stadium cookies, of course, you need the multi-colored sprinkles. These are the ones I use from Amazon, because I like buying in bulk. But when I run out, the Walmart ones work fine too.
1.8 pounds of rainbow non-pareils for cookie decorating. Use also with cakes and sweets of all kinds to add splashes of color.
You will see more videos on each of the sports sugar cookies pages, but here are a couple to introduce you.
This next video is a precursor to the next section, platters and pizookies.
The baseball cookie platter in the video was bought through Semi-Sweet Designs. Mike has an array to choose from, and you get 10% off as a first-time customer. This is not an affiliate link; I order regularly from him, I'm just a fan! Baseball Platter Cookies (opens in a new tab)
How do I package the cookie platters?
After they are dried and dusted with cornstarch, I place a dab of icing on the back of each cookie and arrange them on a round cake board. I then heat-seal them in a large food-safe bag.
***Hint: If you are dusting with cornstarch, dust, let the sports sugar cookies set for a few minutes, then dust off with a soft paintbrush. The object is to let the wetness from the icing and/or food color markers absorb the moisture.
Finally, you may be wondering what a pizookie is. They are called several names. However, I choose to call them pizookies, as that is the name they originated with...not to mention it is such a fun and memorable name. Besides, it adds both words, pizza and cookie. Makes sense, right?
Here are some pizookies I've done. I enjoy doing them over the traditional sports sugar cookies when I am in a hurry. They are so fast and easy! I also usually use buttercream frosting on them. If you want a great American buttercream recipe, get it free, plus a bonus dreamy chocolate buttercream recipe here: Best Buttercream Frosting.
Now you are prepared to get to decorating!
